How Often Should I Have My Hair Cut?

It's a simple question, but one we get asked frequently.  Having a trim regularly is essential for healthy hair, and healthy hair is essential for beautiful hair.

The general rule is six to eight weeks for longer styles, and four to six weeks for shorter cuts.  The longer you go without a trim, the more your ends are going to split over time, and the only way to truly fix split ends is to cut them away.  The more time passes once an end is split, the further the breakage will go up the hair shaft, and the more will have to be cut later.  You have to get your hair trimmed in order to save the length, even if it sounds counter-intuitive.

There are other factors at play as well.
If your hair is highlighted, colored, or permed, then you will need to have your hair trimmed more often, as your ends are porous and are more prone to breakage.  If your hair is very curly, you can usually get away with a little more time between trims, as the ends tend not to show as much as they would on straight hair.

A great way to extend the amount of time in between cuts is to ask your stylist for a deep conditioning treatment, such as a Redken Chemistry Treatment, each time you get your hair cut.  This will help seal the ends and keep them from splitting.

So remember, stick to a regular trimming schedule for healthy, beautiful hair!
